The Ironwood Volunteer Fire Department is the oldest continuously operating
department of the City of Ironwood, having been in service since 1887.
Since it's founding the department has protected the citizens
of Ironwood and of Erwin Township. Ironwood Township was also protected
by the IVFD until 1972 when Ironwood Township created it's own volunteer fire department.
As with any volunteer fire department, the IVFD members come from all walks
of life. It has included at one point in time, various government employees, cooks, paramedics, nurses, students, bus drivers,
factory workers, carpenters, truck drivers, draftsmen, musicians, laborers, salesmen, bank tellers, contractors, linemen,
business owners, retail sales persons, delivery drivers and other occupations too numerous to mention both female and male.
These citizen volunteers receive the same training as
any full-time firefighter in Michigan, not only in all aspects of fire fighting and fire prevention, but in first aid, CPR,
rescue, hazardous materials mitigation, emergency driving, building construction and many other diciplines.
The members of the Ironwood Volunteer Fire Department are proud of their
department's more than 125 years of continuous service to the citizens of the communities it serves, and look forward to continuing
in the finest tradition of the fire service.
